Search Engine Optimization is the key to Internet Marketing

All forms of internet marketing have their place. SEM, SEO, PPC, CPA, CPL, email marketing, what do they all mean? Well, SEM and PPC are similar. They mean Search Engine Marketing and Pay Per Click respectively. Both are based around paying another site for a click on a link to your site. PPC is an all incompassing term relating to this activity, while SEM refers specifically to paid clicks from search engine results. Cost per aquisition (CPA) and cost per lead (CPL) are both about being paid for a more interactive event, a sale or a lead.

One key factor to all of these forms of internet marketing is search engine optimization. Sales and leads are where webmasters or Web publishers make their money. To obtain sales or leads, it takes traffic. Email can be a great way to drive traffic, but it is always overshadowed by the possibility of SPAM (unsolicited commercial email). It is a topic that is not discussed on this Web site, or in the ebook. The vast majority of traffic from non-email sources is a result of paid search or natural search (sometimes called organic search). SEO is important to both natural and paid search.

Google is the leader in search algorithms, other search engines seem to always be trying to keep up with them. Google has begun looking at the same criteria for SEM pages as they do for natural search pages. They want to see depth in the site. Multiple pages with relevant content. So, whether you are driving traffic through paid search or natural search, it is important that your pages are formatted properly to attract the search engines and result in the traffic that produce sales and leads.

It can take some time for your Web site to show up in the top of natural search. SEM is a good way to start driving traffic immediately while you are waiting for natural search results. Long term, SEO provides more consistent returns on your efforts with much less requirement on your time.

When combining some basic CSS techniques with sound SEO strategies, you can build a powerful Web site that delivers your message to your customers and search engine bots alike.
